Greetings Tom,
The default settings in Messenger are such that only people can send you messages who are on
your contact list. Either you have a very old account or you've turned this function off.
You can turn it back on by pressing the Alt key in any Messenger window to bring up the menu
bar, choosing the Tools menu, then Options, and then the Privacy tab. Choose the 'Only
people on my Allow list can see my status and send me messages' and click OK.
If you're using some older version of Messenger you may need to open the main contact list to
access the Options menu, and/or instead of the checkbox, move the 'All others' or 'All other
users' to the Block list.
