It does make a difference. My examples were based on the assumption that
indexing was enabled. I suggest using it as it's one of the best features
of Vista. Just make sure that you have upgraded to Vista SP1 and Windows
Desktop Search 4. WDS Version 3 (supplied with Vista) had problems.
Otherwise, try adding logic to your queries. For example:
ext:bak -folder:recycle
will find files with *.bak extension but not in the recycle bin.
