Any way to turn off Norton Protection Center from running in background?

Thanks to the group, I found out that my problem is NOT with Windows
Automatic Update Program, but with Norton.

After installing the latest Norton (Symantec) software, I have the
problem of the connection icons in the system tray being lighted all of
the time, and found out that "Live Update" is running CONTINUOUSLY in
the background. This is really slowing my computer down!!

Is there some way that I can disable this part of Norton (Live Update)
and have it so that I can just check on my own? Perhaps in msconfig?

Thanks in advance.

Bob Coppedge.

There should be an option within NOrton to turn Live Update off.

However, if you turn the Live Update off, what's the sense of having it
installed. You basically are disabling the Virus updates which are used to
protext your system.

You must manually update then every day.

Bob,

You really should consult Symantec for info concerning NAV/NIS:

Run LiveUpdate manually & repeatedly until you get the "no additional
updates" prompt.

Otherwise, contact Symantec Service & Support.

Even trying to make adjustments (which you can't do much) in Live Update
checking for updates doesn't seem to do much. Norton's just keeps on checking
and checking and checking etc

Solution which I'm going to implement is when my subscription is nearly out
of date, remove Nortons and find another program that doesn't hog the
resources as much as Nortons. In the meantime, I'll live with it whilst
investigating other alternatives.

I'm running Norton's 2006.

Or you could check for the service that is running from symantec and
change it to "manual". That way it wont run until you want it to.

Good Luck,

Trevor, if you just start disabling Nortons either in services of via
msconfig you'll only end up with making the program inoperable and leaving
the system open to infection. The best way is to configure things within the
program itself. Live update can be configure a bit to call home only once a
day instead of every 2 hours.
As for Nortons Protection Centre, it's only a pain on initial boot.
