Anyone have trouble with Root Certificates Update?

OK so I got the net framework 3.0 for WinXP from the redistributable page but
now I am gunshy about downloading the Root Certificates Update from the
Windows Update Software(Optional) update list. The technician from Micro$oft
spent hours with me on the phone yesterday trying to have me turn off all
services in msconfig except for Microsoft Update items and all of the Windows
Start Services like Win.INI etc. on the General tab but my computer kept
saying to us that I needed administrator approval to do such a thing, even
though I am the system administrator of my personal computer. We even tried
it in safe mode with networking but the same error popup window kept coming
up. The gentleman finally advised me to only do express updates from
Microsoft Updates as a resolution to the problem.

So my question is, has anyone else lost total internet access and the
ability to turn off or restart their computer with the start menu after
installing the recent Root Certificates Update for WinXP SP2 in the
software(optional) part of Windows Update?

Here's the description I see, tell me if any of you have any trouble with
this download please?

Root Certificates Update
Download size: 248 KB , less than 1 minute
This item updates the list root certificates on your computer to the latest
list that is accepted by Microsoft as part of the Microsoft Root Certificate
Program. Adding additional root certificates to your computer enables the
use of Extended Validation (EV) certificates in Internet Explorer 7, a
greater range of security enhanced Web browsing, encrypted e-mail, and
security enhanced code delivery. Details...

This is one of a few non-critical updates that causes my system to hang. My
XP-Pro crashed last Monday. There were periods where it would not shut down
or start up. I am so anxious to get running that I am trying to avoid
anything that will cause my system to hang.

I'd think that the .NET 3.0 update is the source of any problems, not Root
Certificates Update.

Yes I and several people are having the same problem. Take a look at "Latest
Root Certificate Update" forum idem.

Having Installed Root Certificates and net framework 3.0 twice and both times
it shuts down my internet connection and my virus program then locks up my
computer requiring a manual shutdown to get it back up. This is after I did a
system restore to get running again. If anyone finds a cause or cure, I
would like to know it.

Not true. I installed the Root Certificates Update, and lost internet
connectivity, and my McAfee, but I never upgraded my .NET v2. The Certificate
update can't be uninstalled via Add/Remove Progs - I had to do a system
restore (via F8 at bootup) to get my internet and McAfee functionality back.

What I posted was simply a supposition, and it was a reply to only Quiztar's
post.

Like many other security applications (including ZoneAlarm), your McAfee
(VirusScan? VirusScan Plus? Internet Security?) may include "protections"
which are interfering with the changes being made by Root Certificates
Update.

NB: In most cases, disabling the application does NOT disable these
"protections".

I have XP Media Center Edition 2005. IE 6 since I was having too many
problems on IE7.
I updated the below:
Root Certificates Update
This item updates the list root certificates on your computer to the latest
list that is accepted by Microsoft as part of the Microsoft Root Certificate
Program. Adding additional root certificates to your computer enables the use
of Extended Validation (EV) certificates in Internet Explorer 7, a greater
range of security enhanced Web browsing, encrypted e-mail, and security
enhanced code delivery.

My problem: I wasn't paying attention and realized too late that I am still
on IE6. I pay my long distance bills each month per internet. I am not able
to do this now since I downloaded the above. I am allowed to proceed just so
far and then I get the Internet Explorer window that due to error, I will be
shut down. Choices: Debug, Cancel, Send report. Doesn't matter since I get
closed down. Cannot proceed to take copies of phone reports, etc. I know it
is from the Root Certificate since I have had no problems prior. I am still
able to turn off and start up my pc without a problem.

I was told to review add/remove and delete but the root certificate is not
there. I do know that it did affect my Adobe Reader PDF since it now says
there are errors and that is what I use to make copies and pay my phone bill
with.

Anyone have a solution?

Thanks, Haughy

Please check to see if there is also a [click here] link.
If so capture the Error Signature you will see.
You can do this by using the mouse and the keyboard.
Unfortunately there is no normal right-click menu for the text.
E.g. doubleclick on a word, press Ctrl-a, Ctrl-c and paste
the result into a reply.
