Anyone having probs with KB 896358?

Hi all,

Anyone having probs with this update and Nero?

It's either this file and the latest version of Nero
clash/conflict, or this update has probs
with HT CPU's.

Because this update is installed on 2 PC's here.

BOTH PC's have XP SP2.

BOTH PC's have Nero 6.6.0.16.

When I run Nero Startsmart, and click
on the ? on here, it freezes the system, and hh.exe is
the file that hangs.

Clicking on this file on the other PC however,
it loads fine?

Also, previously, when loading Nero Infotool
it brought up the devices but hung 1/2 way as well.

So, why would the other PC (which doesnt use
an HT CPU, work fine, and this CPU which is
a 2.4 HT CPU hang)?

And the file that hangs is this hh.exe file, which 896358 updates

(Well I think this update updates/patches hh.exe doesnt it)?

I dont think the burners are the prob, they're both
on DMA, and both work.

So, any ideas if 896358 is a bit stuffed?

Or whether it conflicts with Nero or not?

Thanx

(are you using Norton??)

compare your file versions - assuming all machines were SP2 before patching,
the versions should be
Hh.exe
5.2.3790.2453
26-May-2005
23:26
10,752
SP2QFE

Hhctrl.ocx
5.2.3790.2453
27-May-2005
02:08
546,304
SP2QFE

Hhsetup.dll
5.2.3790.2453
27-May-2005
02:08
41,472
SP2QFE

Itircl.dll
5.2.3790.2453
27-May-2005
02:08
155,136
SP2QFE

Itss.dll
5.2.3790.2453
27-May-2005
02:08
137,216
SP2QFE

If yours are different, try disabling your AV and/or reinstalling the patch
while in Safe Mode

OK

hh.exe is the same file size, same version, but modified
shows 27 May 11:22:01

hhctrl.ocx same version / size modified shows
9 Sept 8:45:57

Hhsetup.dll same version / size Modified 27 May
2:04 p.m

Itircl.dll same version / size modified 27 May 2:04

itss.dll same version / size Modified 27 May 2:04:27 p.m

Where does SP2QFE show??

Under Version / file version on all of these, it shows
srv-3_sp1_gdr.050525-1542

Should I be looking at modified, for the dates
you've posted??

Interesting, I thought I'll change the IDE
cable for the dvd and cd burner.

Since, Infotool seemed to hang after it showed the dvd burner. I've rebooted
3 times.

At the mo, this works, and so does the ? under Startsmart.

And so does Nerovision Express (which also hung), when I went to run it
before.

As you say - Interesting indeed!

WRT the SP2QFE, that's where the files are supposed to be initially
installed during the update procedure - if they're not there, then the patch
is not properly installed.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896358
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms05-026.mspx
(look in the security Update Information section)

Try using Belarc Advisor as a final check - www.belarc.com - it will tell
you whether any patches are broken.

Thanx for the link Noel.

I'll check it out.

Well so far, so good since I've replaced
the IDE cable.

I replaced the previous CD burner

(ASUS 52x24x52 with an ASUS 52x32x52)!

Maybe the new burner thought the old IDE cable was too slow?

Altho both the old and the new CD burner still
show up as DMA 2.

And the DVD burner, (I've just noticed) which I'm pretty sure was DMA 2 has
now jumped to DMA 4!

Can't say I've seen DMA 4 on a DVD or CD burner before.

(I put an 80 wire IDE cable in for the DVD and CD burner).

And the IDE cable that was in previously worked fine

(Well until I made 2 coasters using Nero doing a data cd from the last 2
CD's I had).

BUT it burned fine for an MP3 CD.

Maybe that was the reason. The cable I had in the
case was dying, or kinked somewhere?

I've rebooted about 10-11 times so far.

And all still run!

So, I think I've figured out that this ?
(which brings up hh.exe), under Startsmart, Infotool, entering the serial #
for extras under Startsmart, and
Nerovision Express, seemed to be linked
to this 1 cable!

Because if one of these froze, the others
froze too.....after I rebooted.

And if one worked all worked?!

DMA4 doesn't work over 40-wire ribbons - which explains the difference
there.

I've given up trying to understand the/any logic behind the way Nero
works/doesn't work!<g>

Ah ok gotcha Noel.

Didnt think putting an 80 wire cable on
the secondary IDE would make things any
faster. Obviously, I was wrong!

Well, what I've posted here so far, I think the
burner itself, is the culprit.

Its either got a buggy firmware version on it,
or its a faulty cd burner/product.

Even tho the BIOS / Post screen / XP detects
it, there's no point having it connected, because it
freezes Nero, and the system!

Because on the ASUS forum site, someone
else has the same burner (but an external version)
and its doing exactly the same thing!

Because, I replaced the cable, (which I thought
HAD fixed it). It didnt. I updated the firmware
to the latest 1.01, it still hung, so i went back to the
original firmware 1.00, and it still hung those Nero programs!

It has now been removed, and everything seems to
run as normal (like before I installed it).

And now it'll be going back to the shop for a replacement
or refund lol.

Its less than a week old. I got it on 4/9, its now 10/9.
