this windows "Update" is getting to be a joke, but then again so is the
operating system "Windows XP". Nothing will update and you're always getting
update failures, what are we suppose to do, it's your operating system and
you're the ones writing the update procedures, you bounce us around to
meaningless links that have nothing to help us solve the problem. Really, if
it fails to install an update, why did it fail, what caused the problem, we
don't know and we're not techie's, this is suppose to be the "Home" edition.
Right now I'm getting when trying to go to "Windows Update" a message that
says it failed to load the page required, then has links that don't mean a
thing, will somebody please fix this damn thing.

There needs to be a World Wide class action lawsuit against Microsoft for
there incompentence, Bill Gates has made billions off of us peddling beta
software as a reliable version.

Lord help those who rush to the "Vista" version, I'll wait till SP3 comes
out on that one. PS "Only Fools Rush In".

I hear your pain, but to be totally factual, Windows update problems are
not not always the fault of the operating system. Windows XP works great
with my PentiumIII, Acer full tower with lots of RAM. The problem is more
likely to be propriotary hardware and configuration from computer
distributors.

On what basis do you say this?

Read this NG, Windows updates have been a constant pain in the bum
since well forever, and have gotten far worse since the advent of the
badly flawed WGA Validation system which seems to have improved
recently.

I don't use Windows updates at all any longer, I do not have WGA
installed on any machines at all, and all patches go in with no
problems whatsoever. Which proves to me its not the patches themselves
which are bad (I get them via a commercial update service not from
MSFT), but the implementation of all the WGA crap and other rubbish
from MSFT which causes the failures experienced by some users. Having
said that there have always been problems with Windows Updates long
befor WGA it has just got a lot worse since.

Hardware is irrelevant as long as you are not silly enough to allow
drivers to install from Windows updates, if the system runs XP, goes
online, activates and passes WGA Validation it should update OK via
Windows Update.

Configuration can be a problem I will grant you that and updates for
other software or security apps can stop Windows updates from working
but in my experience that is very unusual.

No point complaining here, this is a public newsgroup, any MSFT staff
in here are on there own time and helping on a voulentary basis. Most
of the responders in here do not work for MSFT, MVP status means that
the responder specialises in an aspect of IT and is recognised as an
expert, MVPs do not usually work for MSFT although the odd few do.

There are people at MSFT who are well paid to "care", but they are not
likely to read public NGs, they may occasionally monitor NGs but not
on a regular basis.

MS employees are not allowed to be MVPs. Some MVPs who have been hired to
work for MS must give up their MVP status.

Why, are they suddenly less valuable?

No. Once an employee, the ex-MVP's are considered to be
officially expressing Microsoft's position. That is, they
have become "tainted"...officially.

Didn't realise that.

Is it possible an MSFT employee could obtain MVP status under an
alias? Just a thought.

Probably not a good idea if Microsoft employees wish to stay on as
Microsoft employees. Certain legal niceties, including conflict-of-
interest issues, non-disclosure agreements, etc. However, there is
nothing to stop the Microsoft employee to become recognized, resign
and then accept the MVP accolade from his or her peers outside of
Microsoft. It all boils down to where one wants to make one's own
bed.
