anything better than chkdsk?

Every time I start up Vista Ultimate, chkdsk is ran but finished at 28%
during stage 2 of 3. Anyway to check the disk to get rid of this disk check?

Try running chkdsk from safe mode.

From an elevated command prompt give this command
fsutil dirty query C: [Replace C with the letter for the drive.]
Enter

Does it show if the drive is dirty?

Download a drive diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's web
site. That will create a bootable floppy or CD. Run the diagnostics from
there.

Also make sure there is a full backup of all data. In some cases chkdsk can
result in unrecoverable data corruption.

I believe the problem is not with the drive itself but rather some files
are corrupted and chkdsk is not able to fix...

Ok, what about the answers to the questions? Is the dirty bit set? Did you
run diagnostics on the drive?

Yes, fsutil shows the drive is "dirty"

Yes, diag tool from Seagate shows the drive is fine.

What I did to get rid of the "dirty bit":
1) boot into WinXP. I dual boot winxp and vista with boot-us
(www.boot-us.com). With boot-us, my xp and vista does not have access to
each other's files and each os' boot up files are located at their
respective partition.
2) delete vista partition
3) crate a new partition at the vista partition location but specified a
smaller partition size using Acronis Disk Director
4) format new partition and verify the partition is not "dirty"
5) delete the newly created partition
6) restore vista backup image using Acronis True Image.
7) Boot up Vista and no prompt is made to perform chkdsk.

Interesting. How was that Vista partition originally created where the
dirty bit was set and wouldn't change?

The Vista was installed with one single brand new hard drive in the
system. Once it is installed, the WinXP drive is added back to the
system and boot-us is installed for dual boot operation. The setup works
fine for week until Vista crashes. To restart the system, I have to hit
the reset button. From that point on, chkdsk is ran at every boot up of
Vista.
