Hi,

Rundll32.exe is just loading 32-bit library (.dll) files, so it often gets
blamed when it's not the cause. The faulting module is sometimes the
problem, but it would be unusual for user32.dll to have an issue on a fresh
installation. I would suspect a memory error instead, have you tried running
the memory diagnostic tool?

Either that, or there is a conflict in preloaded software that is part of
your system image. Symantec software has been known to cause these sorts of
issues.

Rick, the computer is brand new. So software problems such as Symentec are
possible. (Clean installation). But since it is so new...I still have not
fully tested the memory. Here are the specs:

Intel E8400
2 - 2 gig sticks of RAM
X38 Chipset

Software problems are not possible...By the way this forum system sucks..I
can even edit by own posts.

Hi Bman,

Software problems are very possible on a new machine. Just because something
was preinstalled does not mean it will run without issues.

As I mentioned, start with the memory diagnostic tool built into Vista. If
that is successful (no errors), then we will need to selectively disable
software that loads at boot, and if Symantec's software is installed I'd be
starting with it.

Also, it's best to include the text of the message you are responding to, as
it makes it easier for others to follow along. This forum, which you are
accessing via the web page, is best accessed via a newsreader. You can't
edit posts once created because they are slurped off to many other
interfaces, so it's best to reread it before sending.

Currently the response on that error is that your system is out of date on
Windows Update and should be updated. If it still crashes after you are
fully up to date, what is the *new* fault bucket number?

Thanks for the response...I am totally up-to-date (SP1) . I built this
machine myself. I installed Vista Clean...not part of any package. I was
getting the run32dll.exe has stop responding error. (Computer still works
fine before and after) I was getting this error through out the processes of
installation. But you are right the specifics on the error have changed. I
will post these. The exact message of the error will be posted next time I
see it. (Which is every few hours...not really assocated with any one
activity.) My machine has new specs so this could be a related to this issue
or more likely a memory issue. It passed the basic vista memory test. But the
enhanced memory test did not complete because I shut it off, How long is this
suppose to take for one pass of 4 gigs? I was over an hour.

The exact error message is "Windows host process (Rundll32.exe) has stopped
working. This has no effect. It is just annoying, since it keeps popping up
every few minutes. I have tried a few things, will report back if solution is
found.

I fixed the error...by doing two things (I am sure one worked and the other
was unrelated...but I don't care beacause my problem is fixed.)

1. I added rundll32.exe to the DEP exclusion list

2. In folder options (global setting); view; checked shown icons never
thumbnails

I suspect #2 is the problem because I have a lot of desktop items that where
placed on the desktop shortly after installation

Thanks,

Bman
