Application keeps sending request to disable Desktop Window Manage

Hi,
I have installed a program but notice it closese itself after 3\4mins.
Having looked in the event log the following error is found:

The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was
disabled by a running application

or

A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process
(CCNA5.exe)

What can be causing this to happen?

I will be grateful for any information received,

Hi Mark,

Hmm, that sounds like the RouterSim Visualiser application! :-)

Applications which perform heavy duty graphics may want to take control of
the graphics buffer. This is okay, but it is incompatible with Vista's
normal "desktop composition" style of graphics, enabled by DWM; so the app
needs to temporarily disable DWM while it runs. This is normally no
problem - your screen just looks a little bit "flat" while the app is
runing, and then auto-bounces back into living 3D Areo colour, once you
close the app.

It sound like in your case, the RouterSim app is able to disable DWM; but
for some reason, it cannot then continue running.

First thing I'd try is:
- right click the CCNA5.EXE file in Explorer
- choose Properties
- click on Compatibility tab
- under Settings, check Disable Desktop Composition
- click OK
.... and try again. If it continues to fail, I'd be inclined to touch base
with RouterSim; they may have many customers using Vista (whereas
proportionately few Vista users are running RouterSim!)
