It's using the old Netmeeting components yes, but there's a secondary application which
negotiates the connection and starts the individual apps (the dialog with the "waiting" in
it).
You mention a firewall -- are you using a router or other NAT device? If so, it must support
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) in order for a direct connection to be a established. You can
check the status of this by clicking the Tools menu (or pressing Alt-T if the menu is
hidden), then Options, then Connection category, wait for a few moments and see what
Messenger has detected your network status to be.
