Applying updates to the installation CD

Hello,

I want to reinstall XP Pro when I get a new hard drive, its nice to have a
fresh system sometimes. The disc I have is already patched with Service Pack
2, and I was wondering how I would go about applying newer patches to it's
contents and just burning a new copy so it is as updated as possible at the
time of the installation.

I remember reading a long time ago that update files can be extracted and
applied directly to the i386 folder, but I'm not sure exactly how to go about
this because I don't have the specific update files that have been released
after SP2. If I get a hold of them would it be a straightforward copy/paste
or do they need to be compressed somehow? Can I just use the files from my
current windows installation sense those are the updated ones? This would be
assuming I had a list of them from somewhere, which I don’t.

Thanks,
Michael

Howdy Michael,

You could follow the instructions here for slipstreaming SP2 into an XP
CD, just extract the updates to the XP SP2 CD instead :
http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm

To see which updates have been released since SP2 was released, you can
go here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx
Bear in mind that you'll only need the latest Cumulative Update for IE
and that some of the updates have been superseded.
With a little sleuthing you can create a fully updated XP SP2 CD.

The best place for beginners (and experts in my opinion) to find information
on making custom updated installation CD/DVDs..

The list of updates you are looking for:
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=31886

Go through this page and you will end up with the best CD/DVD you could
want.
