I have a Compaq desktop pc running Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (with
windows media centre) that also runs Microsoft Office 2003 Std for students
and teachers.

I have NEVER installed Works Suite 2005 on this pc. Despite this Microsoft
Update has not only installed a 'Security Update' for this application but
also, apparently, it has also 'silently' installed Microsoft SQL Server 2005
Compact Edition [ENU] on my pc. I say 'silently' because it did it without
informing me by the process of listing it in the 'available updates' shown
when I check manually nor did it even show it after wards in 'view update
history' OR 'installed updates'.

I have recently installed some 'Windows Live' applications (live mail, live
writer and live photo gallery) in order to see if they are any different or
'better' than the 'non-live' versions, and I have no idea if that was the
cause of the 'hidden SQL installation' but they were installed on the same
day. NOTHING else was installed on that day either by me manually, or by
anything else automatically - except for possible updates to the 'Live'
applications (and other applications via their auto update feature), which
are also NOT shown in 'view update history' or 'installed updates'.

I have to say that I for one resent microsoft or anyone else installing ANY
'applications' or any other kind of files on my pc without asking me first.
It is already a pain in the arse that crap gets on your pc without your
permission but for microsoft to do it without your permission or fail tell
you they would like to or are going to anyway whether you like it or not, and
then not list the 'application' in BOTH 'view update history' AND 'installed
updates' is ridiculous when they keep telling us to be so careful about what
we install or what links we click on whether in an e-mail or on the web.

This is before you even get on to the subject of me never having even heard
of this application before never mind the fact that now I have heard of it I
can't see any need for this application any way. It small size of barely 2 Mb
is not even relevant to this problem.

I hope some 'MVP' sees this note and can relay this info to 'HQ' in either
Reading, UK or Redmond, Washington and finds out what their opinion is, but I
doubt it will make any difference even if they do.

Are you sure? I think it would be quite likely that both are
optional components of an Office Install. Does yours have
any components for developers? Having a test SQL server
installed for them would be understandable.

Such an original install wouldn't have anything to do with WU/AU
necessarily, so it would not be listed with its updates.

Perhaps you should try doing a repair/change of your Office install
to see exactly what all you do have from it and reconfigure if desired?

In any case you are more likely to get knowledgeable help about
Office products from an Office NG. Cross-posting to one for
convenience.

Good luck

Security updates can sometimes apply to applications other than the one they are
named after. Office is particularly freaky in this regard. It doesn't sound
like anything to worry about.

I don't know, but this may be the case. If so, it is because one or more of
those applications needed the SQL database in order to function.

It isn't particularly uncommon for either Microsoft or third-party applications
to install additional system components as necessary, although typically they
don't bother to tell you about it by putting an entry in Add/Remove Programs.

Harry.

Thanks for your message, Harry.

I guess I should be 'thankfull' that a reference to this SQL application was
even entered in 'programs and features', if as you say other 3rd party (i.e.
non microsoft) applications tend to do the same thing and do NOT often place
any kind of entry in programs and features. It still kind of bugs me though,
that there was and is no reference to the SQL installation from
Windows/Microsoft Update. After all, if there HAD been a reference to the
'required' installation of it before hand, I would never have been alarmed at
it's appearance in Programs and Features.

Noticing your link at the bottom of your reply, I am guessing that you are
either NOT a fan of the Olympics in general or possibly not in favour of them
being held in China.

I find the whole athletic excercise quite boring for the most part, but can
definately appreciate that the inherent 'prestige' that China and it's
government institutions and officers are trying to gain by it is most
definately NOT deserved. The Chinese government hierarchy deserve no prestige
from this event for the same reason that South Africa, and the former
U.S.S.R. was rightly ostracised by boycotts of sporting events due to their
'pollitical differences' from properly democratic countries. As much as some
people want to keep pollitics and sport seperate, this will never happen
while dictators from the left and right try to gain themselves undeserved
prestige from it.

Remember the Berlin Olympics (Hitler was Chancellor of Germany at the time)
and Hitler refused to give the Gold medal to Jesse Owens, just because of his
skin colour

beings selfishness, greed or incompetence. One World, One People, One Human
Race.
