April 3rd Update Problem with DVD Disk Drive

Ever since the April 3rd Update I have not been able to read or write DVD's.
I have a HP media Center PC m7680n running Windows XP Media Edition. I
installed the patch for the RTHDCPL.exe - illegal System DLL Relocation,
however I am still not able to read or write DVD's. I can do anything I want
with CD's but not DVDs. Does any one know of the security update interfered
with the bundled decoders or codecs? I have done everything I can think of:
1. Reboot in Safe Mode
2. Disk Clean-up & Defrag
3. Clean Boot
4. Uninstalled/Reinstalled Drivers
5. Uninstalled/Reinstalled Sonic Digital Media
6. Tech provided Patch
7. Restored to earlier point
8. Regedit.exe menu
9. Services.msc menu
10. Reset BIOS defaults
11. Attempted and failed to install DVD-RW 16X HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-H30L
Drive Firmware update from HP Site. (Stated that my system does not meet
requirements 9994. I have no idea what that means, I meet all requirements.)
12. Installed RTHDCPL.exe Patch from Microsoft
13. System Recovery
14. PC Doctor Test - CD's passed, it will not test DVD portion, as it will
not recognize ANY DVDs

Even after all of that I still can't get my drive to even realize that it
has a DVD in it.

If anyone has any other ideas for me I would SOOOOOOOOO appreciate it.
Em

And what's the exact error message and/or problem you're facing?

Bye,

No error message, when I attempt to open the drive it will say "Please insert
Disk into Drive F". No matter what media program I use, or method that I use
my drive will now not even realize there is a disk in the drive if it is a
DVD. I have always been able to play DVD's and write DVD's (say burning a
home video to DVD) now the drive acts like there is nothing there when ever I
put in a DVD.

I read through the list of things you have done... but I cannot clearly and
definitively say you 'uninstalled the patch'. Sure - you did a system
restore - but do you have automatic updates on and did you restore to a
point before the patch was installed? Did you uninstall the individual
patch(es) before system restore?

Yes I uninstalled everything before the System Recovery, that's my fault I
wasn't specific enough. Auto Update is off, it has to ask my permission to
update. I can't take it all the way back to factory though, as my PC did
not come with the OS Disks, and with my drive messed up I can't make them.
I just didn't know if the update interfered with the Decoders and Codecs
that would help the drive recognize and read DVD's.

Funny (strange) - I am having the same problem with my m7680n, but I
can read and write DVD's, but not CD's. Firmware update fails as
well. Same results in PC Doctor, but fails on CD's. I did get it to
recognize a data CD that I left in the drive during a reboot, but it
wouldn't recognize it after ejecting and re-inserting. I haven't been
able to duplicatwe it though. HP customer service could not figure
it out, but they are exchanging my drive to see if its hardware or
software. I don't know if the drive ever read both - I've had it for
a few months, but my wife was using it. She wouldn't know the
difference since it has two drives. I just noticed it last week.
