I have been using numerous PPC's since they was named PalmPc, and i have
never had any real problems with ActiveSync.
Well, that excelent problemfree track ended with ActiveSync 4.1...
Now i cant for the life of it get my my computer (HP NC8000 laptop) to sync
with my brand new HTC Wizard (WM5).

I think i have tried everything. 3 days with frustrations and hairpulling.
Im about to give up. Someone resuce me....

Problem: When i plug in the device XP (sp2 with all updates), finds the
device, and the sync wizard starts, sometimes it even let me complete the
initial partnership setup.
Then after about 30-60 seconds AS tells me the PPC disconnected (AS icon
changes to gray).
At my home computer everything works fine, always.

Here is what i have tried/checked (in no particular order)

- Checked that no firewall is interfering with the sync process (no firewall
installed/activated
- Tried to downgrade to AS4.0 (no success)
- Manually removed/ files/reg keys related to ActiveSync
- Reinstalled AS4.1 numerous times.
- Removed Cisco VPN client
- Removed other software wich i thought could interfere (like VMware)
- Tried to install with and without Trend Antivirus & Microsoft Antispyware
- Uninstalled Outlook, Reinstalled.
- Started with fresh PST file/New profile
- Repaired Outlook (repair menu under help)
- Read all i can find on the net (Troubleshooting USB @ MS PPC site,
www.pocketpcfaq. + + + )
- Hard resetted device :-( 3 times.
- Renamed device (names i have used: Q9100, Wizard, WQutek, QtekW)
- Updated bios on the computer, updated GART and chipset drivers and
everything else i can think of from HP's support site)
+ + (cant remember everything - im exhausted now)

Connection still "dies". Seems impossible to get a reliable connection.
Please, help me *waves white flag*. What else can i try?

is the USB plugged directly into the computer? if it is plugged into a hub
or even a docking station, it will not be reliable.

Realize i forgot to tell: Yes its plugged directly into the computer (i have
tried both with the docking station and the computer).
After my initial post i decided to try setting up AS4.1 on another computer
at work. Exactly the same happend there. 30-60 seconds after the pocket pc
connects, the connection dies. The other pc (3 year old desktop computer)
has a completely different setup than the first one i tried (1 year old
laptop). Only thing they have in common is that they both are HP (running XP
sp2, Outlook 2003 + ActiveSync 4.1)

Needless to say, its extremely frustrating. Without the ability to sync my
new Windows Mobile 5 Phone Edition is as good as worthless :-(.

Willy -

I would like to debug through your issue and try to understand what's going
on. If you are willing to do so please email me directly at my posting
address but remove the "online" part.

Thanks

hi

try this one thing, cause this is what fixed my synching problems.

disconnect the wm5 ppc from the computer
delete the partnerships in active synch
open outlook and send/receive (make sure you are connected to your exchange
server)
plug in the wm5 ppc into the computer
create a new partnership and let it synchronize

that's what I had to do, and I have had no synch problems since.

It appears that when you upgrade to active synch 4.x you can't synch with an
off line outlook in cached mode.
once you create the new partnership you can now synch offline, just not the
first synch after the upgrade to AS 4.x

let us all know if that helped

Hi George

Guess it doesnt hurt trying to troubleshoot more on my own untill i recieve
mail.
Thanx for your suggestion. I wish it was that "simple", As i said earlier, i
have tried reinstalling Outlook, Repairing Outlook, starting from scratch
with new offline files, plus plus
In any case i tried what you suggested to no avail. I have tried a few
times today too. The connection to ActiveSync still "dies". I cant even
complete the initial partnership wizard. Ususally "disconnects" while
ActiveSync are "Retrieveing settings" in the new partnership wizard. But i
have succeded establishing the partnership 2 or 3 times. But once its
established, i can never complete the following sync.
Before someone suggests to hard reset the device: I have done that 6-7 times
already. Im now on my 5th "ActiveSync 4.1 trial of patience" day trying to
get this to work.

After years of problemfree ActiveSyncing i find the first sentence/thesis on
Microsofts Active sync mildly inflammatory. I says "Microsoft ActiveSync
provides a great synchronization experience with Windows-based PCs and
Microsoft Outlook right out of the box"...

Patient regard

WillyG

hi again

sorry to hear its not working for you, but I have a suggestion, have you
tried another usb cable incase the one you got with your ppc is faulty?

it sure doesnt sound like it can keep a connection long enough for you to
synchronize.

good luck
George S

Hi!

Well, this may sound like a joke, but I'm serious - try syncing via a
serial connection instead of USB.
That's what saved one of my office mates when nothing else (including 2
of our internal IT people) could stop AS from disconnecting over and over
again.

Good luck,

Kerstin

Thankfully Willy was able to solve his problem. Turned out he did have an
antivirus program blocking one of the ActiveSync ports. Once that was
unblocked things began working.
