Assigning an icon to a pif file

Vista will allow icons in bmp or ico formats to be displayed when
associated to a 32-bit console program through a .lnk file but will not
allow either type of image to be displayed to a 16-bit application, which
requires a .pif file as a shortcut. I have several programs that were
written in Quick Basic and were then compiled. I cannot assign an icon to
them, they just show a blank white square. Does anyone have a solution?

Thanx for any help anyone may provide.
