Association (avi)

I have .avi files associated with Media Player Classic
(http://mewnlite.com/associate.jpg) but no matter what the avi files all
come up in Windows Media Player. The only way I can make it play in Media
Player Classic is to open it directly from Media Player Classic.
Is this something in the registry? How do I fix it?
Thanks

Which MPC installer did you use?

Most of them that I'm aware of have used some pretty bad/broken association
logic. This sucks and it would be great to get those fixed up.

What are the registry keys and values under:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.avi
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AVIFile
?

right click on an avi file, select the option to open with , select choose
default program, then you can set it up as you want

Yep, they're writing bad associations. Have them talk to me and I'll get
them fixed up. Or bug them to fix this.

I would extremely rather not directly solve this for you as a one-off
solution because that leaves K-Lite being dumb. I want Media Player Classic
to work for everybody, and we get there in this case by fixing the broken
K-Lite MPC installer. I would work with *them* to solve this.

It should take a knowledgable dev about 83 seconds to straighten this out,
but I'm still here to provide advice to them if they need it.

This again ties into my ongoing theme that it's just braindead for each
"codec pack" to make its own installer for common components, especially
given that various of them come up with bad plans or bad installers. As yet
again evidenced here.

If I remember I'll hit up my indirect K-Lite contact on Monday and see if he
can pass this along to those peoples.

I had used an old version (1.3.5) of K-Lite which is pre-Vista. I
uninstalled it and reinstalled version 3.4.5 and that took care of the
problem. Without your prodding, though, I'd have never figured it out.
Thank you very much!

Haha, I was just about to ask you which version you were using so I could be
certain that I was looking at their current association logic. I'm pleased
to hear that they've already fixed this. Thanks for the update. =)
