Mark;
You can leave it set to Automatic but also disable the driver part.
Right click My computer
Click Properties.
Click Hardware tab
Click Windows Update button
Check "Never search..."
Click OK and follow prompts.
Generally only get drivers if there is an expected benefit.
Simply having a newer driver available is not enough.
