re: WLM 14.0.8089.0726 and Windows 7
It seems I can open an attachment in an email in the oubox by clicking on
the attachment in the preview window but if I open the email in another
window the attachments don't open. Is this by design? Why? Bug?

WLM Menu/Tools/Options/Security
- uncheck the item (Do not allow attachments to be downloaded or opened)

What type of attachment file extension ?

Is the attachment part of an email for a Hotmail type account(Hotmail.com, Live.com, Msn.com) ?

Do you have the same problem in any other folders?

I'm able to open Outbox attachments either from the reading pane or in
its own window.

The Outbox is a special folder. It's for messages that are ready to
send to the server or currently in the process of being sent. You might
have run across a case where WLM was sending the message as you tried to
open it's attachment.

There is no WLM Menu/Tools/Options/Security. Do you mean WLM/Tools/Safety
Options/Security? I unchecked the box for "Do not allow attachments to be
saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" Didn't make any
difference.

I was trying to open a .doc file and a .pdf file.

It is not a Hotmail/Live type of account. Why would that matter? This is
an unsent email.

Only happens in the outbox as far as I can tell. I was just trying to check
the attachments to make sure they were correct before syncing. I only sync
manually so I can double check my outgoing mail if I want to. If I open the
email that is in the outbox in its own window, the attachments do not open.
Clicking on the same attachments in the same email in the preview pane works.
Once it has been sent the copy in the sent items works fine either way.

Watch out for that. WLM syncs when it wants to whether you tell it to or
not. I haven't figured out how or why it decides when to do it. I try to
save outgoing messages in Drafts rather than Outbox so I can review before
they get sent without my say-so. I don't always remember.

Yes, I have tried numerous settings in the 'check mail every <x> minutes'
but that doesn't seem to do anything to stop this stealth-syncing behavior.

Yes..Tools/Safety Options/Security

Why does a Hotmail account matter ? Since you didn't specify the attachment file type and Hotmail has file type restrictions and
Hotmail places those restriction on message delivered to the server prior to you downloading..it *would* make a difference if your
file type was on their excluded attachment list. Since WLM sync with a Hotmail account mirroring the folders in WLM with those on
the server..I've seen(though not very often)messages in the Outbox in both locations.

Likewise, I'm capable of opening doc and pdf attachments in the Outbox prior to sending, thus your issue may be unique since I
don't recall it ever being brought up in the past. Michael suggested a possibility. I don't know of another reason, but I'm quite
certain that until others can duplicate it, it would unlikely ever be classified as a bug without further detail or duplication
elsewhere.

If it persists...it would probably be a good idea to contact support for WLM(whether that will be fruitful or not, I can't say).
But it is likely that a suggestion to disable your AV to determine if it is attempting to scan the message attachment while being
opened is a factor.

Good luck.

There's a feature/bug in WLM. If there is any sort of communications
error including lost/restored Internet connection or any sort of server
problem such as a news server idle timeout, WLM will immediately do a
synch of mail accounts even if you've told it never to automatically do
that.

Or considered as a necessary feature to ensure Hotmail type accounts(http protocol) were always common in WLM vs the web server.

If that was the intent (keeping HTTP account synced), then involuntary
'syncs' should not occur for POP accounts, but they do.

That's how we see it...based on our preference to separately control the send or receive either by desire or experience from all
prior Msft(and other) email clients.

The other angle.....as long as keeping Hotmail(mail, contacts, calendar) synchronized was the primary focus in addition to
integration with WLMsgr(which can also poll the same Live ID, display an equivalent email counter, and provide a toast for new
messages) then polling specific accounts in WLM takes a back seat to that integration. After all it is 'Live' Mail

Fyi...the Hotmail web UI also polls automatically, including aggregated pop3 accounts(the ability to pop the aggregated accounts[up
to 4] was removed in the last 'Wave').

Personally, I'd like WLM to only poll automatically when signed on with a Live ID and only for the signed on account...but there
have been times where being notified that an expected new pop3 account message is present has been a plus without having to sync
the account.
