Friend received from her daughter a ".webarchive" attachment which she
couldn't open because she didn't have and appropriate software installed.

Friend is running a Windows 7/IE9 desktop whilst her daughter is running
Apple/Safari laptop, I suggested that as she should install Safari as the
easiest way to overcome the issue as this would allow her to open the
attachment . I've Safari on my XP desktop and attachment opened fine

Her daughters original request was just to print the attachment (she hadn't
easy access to one), Some research indicated that if she didn't wish to
install Safari she could save attachment to the desktop then open with IE.

I haven't recommended this option as yet as I tried via my XP/IE8 machine
and it wouldn't open up due to incorrect security settings ?. Could
someone enlighten me as to what IE settings need to be checked/changed?

You may need a plugin to view this in IE. IMO installing Safari to read
an attachment is way over the top. Daughter should send a link, or if
that is not possible, a pdf.

Magnus,

I agree with you but, for own piece of mind, would still like to know what
IE settings need to be
checked/changed, or what plugin do I require and where could I get it?

Save it to the desktop then right click on the file and choose to
'Unblock' > apply > ok, under the general tab.

Your post implies the file extension of the received (attached) file was
..webarchive.

Fyi - the file extension IE uses to save a 'web archive' (which is a single
file of web page) is .mht
- to see IE's html file types for saving a web page > open IE to any web
page and click File/Save As, the available extensions can be viewed in the
'Save Webpage' dialog box by selecting the downward pointing arrow in the
'Save as type:' field

..mht file when viewed in IE may not yield the exact same formating when
viewing the actual web page.

If the received (attached file) is compatible with IE's mht file format,
possibly changing the extension to .mht will suffice.

You can try Winston's suggestion, but I don't hold out much hope.

Tell daughter... Open the web page on her laptop, click the File menu,
Print..., the PDF button (with the little down-facing triangle), then
Save as PDF.

Attach and send.

Most any system can read PDFs...

I suggest...

Winston,

Thanks for response. Unfortunately changing extension to ,mht doesn't
work - formatting all wrong.

Afaik, unblocking the file's properties won't make a difference. If the
'blocking option' is present it usually only throws a request asking you
permission to access the file, but not the ability to open once approved.
