attempt to update to WinXP Service Pack 2 - error code 0x80070005

"Access is denied." error while trying to update to Service Pack 2
(error code 0x80070005)


My Norton antivirus 2005 started giving error messages on system bootup. It
said to uninstall and reinstall.

I uninstalled. When I tried to reinstall, it wouldn't let me, giving an
error message.

I tried Symantec's special uninstall tools.
Still no success at reinstalling.

Symantec said to remove all files and folders containing "Symantec" and to
make some changes to the registry. I did.

Then Windows wouldn't even boot.

Using my original WinXP CD, I "repaired" Windows.

Then I ran Windows update.
It installed about 40 various security updates.

Then I ran Windows update again.
It tried to install SP2, but about half way through the "The updates are
being installed" progress window, it stopped with an error popup: "Access is
deined."

I ran WGADiag2.exe (as per this thread topic).
I tried Windows update again.
But the error remained: "Access is deined."

In IE6, I changed the "Access data sources across domains" setting to
"Prompt" (as per this thread topic).
But the error remains: "Access is deined."


Please help!
