There are two different ways to connect by video with Messenger 9.
The first way is to simply click on the little webcam item that gets
displayed under your contacts image when you have a conversation window
open.
This will allow video however it does not do audio and also it will not
allow full screen.
The second way is to select "Video" from the top menu when you have a
conversation window open. This does allow both full screen mode and also
voice.
So first thing is to make sure that you are using the correct video method.
The second thing for your son to check is to see if his microphone is muted.
For Windows XP go to Start/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices.
One there click on the Voice tab and make sure that the correct device is
listed for accepting microphone input (it should be WebCam, not his sound
card). Then click on the Volume button and make sure that Microphone is
checked.
