I have a Microsoft Lifecam3000 - since upgrading to Vista I have not been
able to make any adjustments to my speaker or microphone volume. Due to this
problem I have stopped using Windows Live Messenger. I have checked my
Webcam and am able to set volume and speakers up OK. Is there an update I
have missed or is this a known problem that will be fixed in time?

Welcome to the club, I have a Logitech Ultimate Laptop camera, with
basically the same problem, only I don't get any sound or audio out, after
checking the settings before I make a connection. So far I've had 4 messages
from Microsoft, with no solutions - I'm beginning to believe they don't
understand what I'm telling them. I can do text and PC to PC chat with no
problems, I get a great video picture but no audio or sound, the volume and
mic controls are not "X"ed out, just frozen.
Of course this is all using Vista Premium.

I also have Vista Premium that I upgraged from XP. Messenger worked
perfectly on XP - until there is a fix for this I will continue to use Skype
- better picture and controllable sound. There does not seem to be a rush
by Microsoft to fix the problem.

I'm on your side, there is another program that works just great and that is
SIGHTSPEED, it's free like Skype, for video conversations. I have used it
and tested it on this laptop. I have not tried Skype on it yet. I have found
there to be quite a difference with the video on Messenger, depends on your
connection, type etc. I bought one camera which simply gave me the worst
picture ever, they took it back without a word - I suspect they had alot of
that model returned. I'm just going to continue monitoring the messenger
news groups until I see smething show up.
Take care.

Greetings Ed,

There have been some issues I've heard about (although not personally experienced) regarding
some Logitech cameras and their Vista drivers. Just so you know.

Yes, I found out the hard way, I use a Logitech 510 camera for video on my
other computers, they no longer support these cameras, so they are not going
to release an Vista update. I did try an installation and it sort of worked,
in the long run, it gave Vista and me fits. I've found a number of
programs/installations that are claimed to be Vista compatible - that aren't
on this laptop - one company even told me it was compatible, yeah sure. I
have a similiar printer problem, but Lexmark claims they will release a new
driver by May 31st )
Thanks for the reply, take care.

Colinj/Ed

We've found the cause for an issue in Vista where the microphone/speaker
device will not work in Video Call (even though it works in Voice Call and
other applications).

For this particular issue, the work around is as follows:

- Launch the tuning wizard via Tools->Audio and Video Setup
- On Step 1: Speaker Setup, make sure the checkbox "Click here if you are
using headphones" is NOT checked.

We will be adding the fix into a future release.
