Try looking in device manager, you may have a sharing violation (irq
with the sound card.
Failing that try re-seating the sound card

Do you have a Creative X-Fi (any flavor) and 4GB of RAM?

Are there still PCI latency issues with Creative soundcards?

I have to admit that I get audio crackle every so often myself which
seems strange on a 4800+ with 2 gigs of ram with a SB Audigy SE.

They've supposedly been fixed in the later driver iterations. but on
some nforce4 mobos, they still pop up.

I built my system in December 2005 (X2 4800+, A8N32, 2GB, 4 SATA
drives) and never had a problem with XP. I upgraded to Vista x86 and
never had a problem. Vista x64, no problem. As soon as I installed
2GB more of RAM, it sounded like an AM radio in an electrical storm.

Nothing I tried would fix it. Auzentech drivers, different PCI slots.
I ended up ditching it for onboard, then HT Omega Claro plus. Works
perfectly now.
