Audio does not work on other end of video call

I have 3 or 4 people that I have tried to setup video calls thru messenger
and only one of them can hear me clearly. One can hear me but I have to
yell. Another cannot hardly hear me at all and is choppy.

The video portion works fantastic on both ends, as well I can hear everyone
crystal clear. I also know that the other party's systems seem to be working
well because I can actually hear their pc's making noise when I type a
message or when they play something. So I don't think they have speaker
issues.

Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Everyone is using DSL so they should have a good strong service. Like I
said, the video comes in great on both ends.

Greetings Gerald,

For testing purposes try just doing an Audio call without the Video and see if that changes
anything.

I have a similar problem on my new 10" Asus netbook (XP home). Incoming
audio during video or audio only calls is very choppy/garbled on my end.
Video is great on both ends and the other people's audio is always clear. It
seems the issue is only with streaming audio from the other users mic. Audio
from winks comes in clear. If the other party uses the audio record tool and
sends it via WLM chat window it comes in crystal clear on my end.
Things I've tried with the exact same results:
-did audio and video set-up several times
-tried with multiple people in multiple states
-my other pc (vista) has no issues using wlm 9 with contacts above
-tried with other pc on my home network (uverse 6 MB) - pc wlm works great
-tried both wireless and wired connections (uverse 6 MB)
-updated RealTek HD driver
-uninstalled and reinstalled WLM 2009 (twice)
-shut down Avg antivirus and other processes (CPU never at 100%)
-tried WLM 8.5 using compatibility work around, but audio didn't work at all
-tested speakers and mic with several programs and everything worked great
-tried Yahoo messenger video/audio chat and it works great on both ends

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Does WLM handle streaming audio
differenetly than sent audio files (winks, recorded audio,...)?

I'd rather not have to swith to Yahoo Messenger. If I did the parents and
in-laws would also have to change & that would be like teaching them a new
language.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi, Matt.
I am wondering what model of Asus netbook you have. I have 3 Asus
1005HA-PU1X with XP home. I have exactly the same problem you have for WLM
v8.5 and V14. I have contacted Asus support, they said they have Windows
Live Messenger running without problem. It is hard to believe that is true.
The Skype is running fine. Asus support told me to upgrade the BIOS which I
did but no help.
Best Regards,
Stan

common thing i see is the RealTek HD, will this sound card driver not
compatible with WLM 9? However there is no update driver than the one i
currently have.

Not sure if you are running the Realtek HD Audio Codec, but if you are, this
worked for me when I had no outbound mic audio on my ASUS 1005HA Netbook web
cam in Windows Live Messenger ----

Click START then RUN then MSCONFIG. Once in there, select the
START UP tab. Once in the start up tab you should put a check mark in the
box next to the RTHDCPL (specifically RTHDCPL.exe is the Realtek Audio
Control Panel Program) command line. This will make it start up the next time
you restart windows. Note - I have an ASUS 1005HA netbook that runs the same
Realtek HD Audio codec as some of these other netbooks having the same issues
with Windows Messenger Live. I accidentally turned this off when I first
purchased my computer and I should not have. Reboot the PC and then try
messenger video chat again and see if your netbook mic can be heard now! It
worked for me.

P.S. If that does not do it, try downloading the newest HD Audio Codec (just
realeased on 4/6/2010) from Realteks web site. I used the .exe version of the
new codec and it installed right over the old codec that came pre-loaded on
my computer dated May of 2009. By the way, I have a 1.6 gig ASUS ATOM Netbook
model 1005HA just like a lot of people. The only thing I wished I had done
differently was not download the new codec at the same time as I restarted
the PC after checking the command in msconfig. So I am not 100% sure which
was the culprit. Someone else please try the msconfig issue first and then
post here and let me know how it worked for you before downloading the new
codec just relased.

Oh yeh, here is the download site. Make sure and then choose High Def Codec
Software:

Greetings,

I don't know this for a fact with regards to your particular driver, but a lot of these
implement echo cancellation and other nice VoIP audio features within their always-running
executable. So that said, usually nowadays you do gain some benefit by running it.

Well besides making it work that is.
