I have been in contact with MIcrosoft about this problem (and yes my Dad's
computer also has Comodo firewall).
Solved the problem in this fashion.
Here is a summary of the key points of the case from Microsoft:
Action: Tried to install the update kb917422.
Result: Buffer overrun detected .. program :86 cafc583a
58922d9f353b3a41cf\update\update.exe A buffer over has been detected which
has corrupted the program internal state .... the program cannot safely
continue execution and will be termninated.
Cause: Possibly due to altered settings on the internet explorer.
Resolution :Reset the websettings to default. Deleted the cookies and
temporary internet files.
Temporarily suspended all third party programs and then sucessfully
downloaded KB917422 update.
