Just ran Update for my father's computer (XP Home Edition). Downloaded all 9
updates. KB 917422 failed to install. Error message ---Buffer overrun.
Update failed to install??? It was, however, listed as an installed update
when I checked installed programs. (I tried removing then reinstalling this
update several times but the Update failed to install. I had to give up on
this update as I was constantly getting the same error message appearing on
the monitor? Microsoft was unable to assist me with a successful install but
will get back to me.

Anyone else having similar problems? Solution???

Similar Problem here. I'm not sure how to reinstall that specific upgrade.
It won't seem to install again.

See the earlier thread on this (I'll bet you have Comodo Firewall
installed, right?)

Beta verions are not susceptible to this issue.

I have been in contact with MIcrosoft about this problem (and yes my Dad's
computer also has Comodo firewall).

Solved the problem in this fashion.

Here is a summary of the key points of the case from Microsoft:

Action: Tried to install the update kb917422.
Result: Buffer overrun detected .. program :86 cafc583a
58922d9f353b3a41cf\update\update.exe A buffer over has been detected which
has corrupted the program internal state .... the program cannot safely
continue execution and will be termninated.
Cause: Possibly due to altered settings on the internet explorer.
Resolution :Reset the websettings to default. Deleted the cookies and
temporary internet files.
Temporarily suspended all third party programs and then sucessfully
downloaded KB917422 update.
