After the updates which came out on August 9 2005, my system locks up about
every 15 minutes or so. I can't even back up my data before it freezes up.
This is a new system and was running perfectly until these updates. This is
totally unacceptable.

System Specs:
Windows XP SP2 Retail Upgrade Version - with all previous updates installed.
Athlon64 3500
BFG 6400 GT
1GB Crucial TwinX DDR 400 Ram
Asus AV8 Motherboard
200 GB WD Hard Drive

Updates Installed:
KB890830
KB894391
KB896423
KB899587
KB899591
KB893756
KB899588
KB896727

Is there anyway to remove these updates by themselves? I really don't want
to have to reinstall windows and all my other software all over again and
frankly I shouldn't have to. Thanks!

Don

You may want to take a look at 'event viewer' to get some idea of what is
causing the lock-ups.. the problems that you are having are not universal..
I accepted all of the updates and have no such issues with them..

You might also want to look at anything else that you may have altered or
downloaded around that time..

I have the same problem intermittently since these updates - the machine
locks up when I log off from a user account: just has a black screen,
unresponsive to keyboard or mouse, off-button is the only solution.

Event log shows no errors, I guess because nothing is functioning to write
one when this happens. The only error evident (but not consistently
correlated with the lockups) is a DCOM error about a server that failed to
register within the required timeout - the mentioned server is to do with the
MS antispyware beta (which I have now removed, just in case).

During the first episode it also somehow managed to delete all download
files from the Temporary Internet Files folder of the session that was still
logged on when the machine locked up. Strangely, it left the cookies and
history intact, except for the history for that day, which was blank. Since I
have been downloading heaps the last few days, for offline viewing (got a
slow dial-up :-( ) I am extremely unimpressed!!!

I have also had the same problems, PC has been running faultless for the last
30 months. The event log does not represent the number of hanging problems I
have had nor the Outlook (not Express) POP3 connection problems I have had
with the recent updates. Only problems in the event log around the time I had
the problems were event ID1001, for IE and Outlook.

I have since restored my system using XP System Restore and all working OK
again, system is stable and emails picked up no problem, there is no doubt
the updates have caused the system instability and Outlook problems in my
opinion.

That's the thing though. I've haven't downloaded or installed anything for
quite a while. I was able to run several spyware checks including the MS one
and several antivirus checks and they all came back negative. I'm definatly
not the only one having an issue with these updates last week. I'm not a
computer novice and I've never had any issues with a windows product until
now. They should really make these updates uninstallable so when an issue
like this comes up it's less of an issue.

I will check the event viewer out if I can do it before the system freezes
up. BTW it also does it in safe mode.

To all in this thread..

Looking at it practically, if the updates were seriously flawed, everybody
would have serious problems, but this is just not the case.. this is not to
say that the updates can't cause problems, but the problems created have to
be a progression of a problem that was already present but maybe not
obviously affecting the local system too much..

I have two computers here that accept ALL updates, and always have, so I
must be doing something that you people are not, or vice versa.. I have
clients too that accept all updates without problems..

As to how you overcome your present situations, I would suggest that you all
do a thorough housekeeping of your systems as a start.. blaming MS for
producing 'flawed' updates when they obviously aren't universally flawed at
all is unfair and will get you nowhere.. there are many non Microsoft
applications etc out there that can and do cause problems of all kinds..

One question for you.. do any of you run Norton products?

Hal, I had the same problem, did a restore and it worked great. i hate to
admit that when the update thing poped up I installed again, same problem, so
I restored again. I then went into Control panel and removed the ones it
would let me. Presently its working ok. I also set it to notify me and that
way I can install one at a time, which will enable me to know which is the
culprit.
let me know if you find the bad one.
