August Update - DVD Drive can only read DVDs, not DVD+R/CD-R/CDs

Hi,
hoping someone can help me out. I've not been having any problems with my HP
Compaq NC6220 notebook's Matshita UJDA765aDVD/CDRW drive until today, after I
installed the August updates via Windows AutoUpdate. I was able to play CD-R
discs yesterday, but today, all CD-R discs as well as original music CD discs
are not recognised by the Matshita drive. No contents are displayed, no
autorun, and attempts to write onto a blank CD-R shows the drive saying that
it is empty (despite having a new blank CD-R).

I can put in original game DVD discs or movie DVDs and their contents will
be displayed via autorun, but NOT DVD+R discs.

I deleted lowerfilters (didn't have any UpperFilters) in the registry and
uninstalled the drive, rebooted to see if it can reinstall the drivers. All
to no avail.

Has anyone encountered this problem? Any ideas on how to resolve this? The
only thing installed since yesterday was the August batch of security
updates, so it could only be that that's causing the problems, somehow
messing up the registry?

Device Manager shows no problems whatsoever (no yellow triangle with
exclamation mark). The DVD drive is visible in device manager, again without
conflicts or problems.

Please, if anyone can help out, I'd really appreciate it. Am at wits end on
what else can be done? I did a system restore to before the updates were
installed, but no luck there either. I'm running Windows XP SP2.

Hi,

Uninstalled each of these one by one, rebooting after each uninstall. No luck.
Uninstalled DVD drivers as well, just in case. Rebooted and XP recognised
the drive and reinstalled the drivers. No luck still.
Uninstalled Nero 6. Reboot. No luck.
Rollbacked Windows Media Player 11. Reboot. No luck.

I went into safe mode and the drive was not able to read my DVD+Rs either.
Inserted original Logitech Install CD, no luck (thought it might've been the
burned CDs that was the problem but nope).

I have an external dvd+/-R USB writer which i installed. XP was able to
recognise the discs I inserted via the external writer, but not the
notebook's dvd drive.

Update - now even the original PC DVD and DVD movie cds are unreadable when
inserted into the notebook drive.

Any other suggestions, greatly appreciated!

Hi Oscar,

I swopped the internal dvd drive (call this Drive A) with another nc6220 in
the office (Drive B). When Drive B was placed into my notebook, it still
won't read cd media (both original and burned). Drive A in the other notebook
works fine. So I'm sure it's not due to a drive problem. This boils it down
to the most likely problem - software and a less likely possibility -
connection problem.

The last resort is to reform the harddisk, but if anyone else encountered
this problem, please let me know.

I had a similar problem with a notebook: CD/DVD could not read data discs and

Hi, Ive the same prob except with an Acer Aspire Notebook 5610Z and a Pioneer
DVR K17RS. DVDs run but CDs do not!! Also tried reinstalling drivers and
deleting aforementioned registry keys. No luck. Help would be much
appreciated - Thanks
