August Updates Grief

Major grief, never before. Win XP Home, SP1 (please don't yell), MSN.com IP,
MSN Explorer for dial-up access.
Checked the Event & WUPD logs: Several error numbers - 0x80072ee7 - seems
to be Hosts problems - "static host" but can not open the hosts file;
0x80200010 - checked this out but MS articles don't have an answer for this
one, and this is the one which comes up when checking update history.
It finally will load the update page and then when I check to download and
install, the proper screen appears but nothing happens and it hangs.
SP2 has not been installed because I can not get a definitive answer as to
whether or not it will ruin my MSN Explorer, e-mail, address book, archived
e-mails, etc., etc. Long ago, I tried MSN 9 only to have it mess up,
royally, the above.
Anyone have an idea how to get the current batch of updates to download ? I
did, finally get 4 of the Sec. UD's for WXP, and then 920670 and 921398 from
the download site (these 2, of course, do not show in the History).
Automatic update is set to download and let me say when to install...
Help ??

Ever since the security updates of this past week I'm having trouble with
Outlook, and in Windows servers often can't be found. Anyone else with this
problem? Any patches that you know of? Thanks.
