I have 4 windows user logins on my home machine running XP home. After the
the latest auto-updates (August), I'm only able to log in using my own user
profile. The others hang up after trying to log in.

I went back to a restore point and all was well until the auto-update did
it's thing again. Did another restore with the internet cable unplugged and
turned off the auto update feature. Plugged the cable back in and everybody
is back on board except now I can't update the machine for fear of losing my
other users and all their email, etc.

Oh, I can't even create a new user. I get the same problem with newly
created users after the update.

Is this a known issue or something I get to deal with all by my lonesome?

John,

how were you able to launch system restore, in safemode or in normal
windows? I cant launch safemode after these screwed up updates.

Please advise...

My primary user log in is fine after the updates. It's just that all the
other logins are broken. I did the restore with the good login.

John, no expert here, but found all firewall setting except administrator was
reset after updating, however my Norton firewall indentified those needing
resetting for internet links. You may have to reset user signin and
passwords. I had to do same to get on community page.

Do you know WHICH update messed you up? I've got XP Home also, and
hope to avoid your troubles.

But, I have to do this everytime I turn on the computer. So, I restored to before the updates and all is working now, but I don't have the updates. I am using Widows Vista Home Premium. One or all of the updates caused this problem.

Lady,

I've no idea which update it was. I think 9 ran through at the same time.
