Auto-downloaded update does not install

Using Win XP pro. Update page is configured to notify me when updates are
available- when one was notified today, I clicked download, but a later
check with the Windows Update page indicated it had not been installed. If I
download an update after being notified via the green icon on the taskbar,
is there some extra procedure I need to go through to install it?

It sounds like you are rather unfamiliar with Windows XP and might be best suited to set automatic updates to download and install.
