When I attempt to transfer programs that I have used forever on XP, Vista
erases them. How can I turn off auto protect?

Your question needs clarification. What do you mean? You cannot transfer
programs. You must reinstall from the original installation disks. What do
you mean by Auto protect erases them? Vista doesn't have autoprotect. Norton
does.

haybaywoody,

Vista is not erasing your programs. Vista does not have "autoprotect".
Autoprotect is an application embedded in some Norton products.

Do yourself a favor and uninstall Norton from your system. It is
nothing but a resource hog and causes more problems than it solves. By the
way, good luck in getting everything Norton off your system.

If you are a staunch defender of Norton products for the home user, and
don't wish to remove it, that is your decision to make. However, sooner or
later your Norton software will bite you in the ass and you may have to
reinstall your system.

Have a nice day.

C.B.

If you remove Norton, you can try these programs for a free antivirus
solution:

AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/)
Avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html)

Cheers
