Auto restart after auto update

After an auto update of Vista (apparently) got message "restart in 5 mins"
and was given option to "postpone."

That's what I wanted NOT "restart in 5 minutes anyway."

what's the rush?

Pls provide an option that really does stop the auto restart cold until I am
thru with my browsing. Now I lost my open tabs with work on my part to open
all 25 again and the abomonible Windows Mail now only displays emails
received in last 15 minutes instead of since midnight last night.

This is maddening, especially for having been offered an empty, fake option
of postponing. And, NO, I don't want to postpone every 4mins and 55 secs. to
stave off an unwanted reboot.

Select an Automatic Updates setting other than "automatic" such that updates
are only installed when you're ready & willing to reboot.

I'm curious, what is your automatic update set to?

Thanks, Mr. Dyer,

I saw that option but prefer the automatic update. If it can be done
automatically that's one less decision regarding my computer that I have to
make.

My irritation comes from being warned by MS of an impending restart (not all
updates require this apparently) and being offered the option by the warning
popup window of postponing restart. That option proved to be illusory as
selecting "postpone" did not prevent a restart about five minutes later, much
to my annoyance. That's the substance of my suggestion -- don't offer the
option unless it does what it's supposed to be.

Thanks for your response.

Richard

Thanks for your interest, John. It's set to automatic update without
intervention from me.

My irritation comes from being offered an option to postpone and then
finding that it was an illusory option.

Best wishes,

Richard

Are you in a network? That postpone really does work (it's 10 minutes,
1 hour and 4 hours as the default) and if it's less than that or forced
you are either in a network or some third party security software has
made adjustments.

What Susan said. AU did NOT ignore your "Not now/Ask me later" request.

If the behavior annoys you so much, I've given you a method to avoid it.

Could you be more specific? Is it set to automatic, everyday at ___ AM/PM?

> My irritation comes from being offered an option to postpone and then

If new updates are scheduled to install at the time you're not using your PC
(eg: 3:00 AM), you will not be bothered with the "restart in __ minutes"
message.

If it's setup this way, new updates will be downloaded but won't be
installed until 3:00 AM or when you shutdown your PC.

<kibbitz>
Your observations above notwithstanding, there are some updates which will
not install without user approval (e.g., IE8).
