AUTO UPDATE AGAIN AND AGAIN?

i have windows xp sp2. my automatic update is set to download the update, but
to let me install it. informed of an update, i install it, and restart my
computer. when the computer restarts, the install icon appears again and
wants me to install the same update.
installed again, it is an "unsucessful install".
if i go directly to windowsupdate, check my installation history, it shows
the original installation a success, repeats a failure. icons show that the
instal was originally a success.
there is a box that comes up when you attempt to reinstall with a checkmark
to remove to "ignore this download". would this fix it?
i saw a post that says spyware programs may be the reason for this problem.
can anyone verify this? thanks. russell

hey robbo66. good morning.
well, i fixed it and this is all i did.
as i mentioned i had my autoupdate setting on "download, but let me install".
i changed the settings to "automatic", the "recommended" setting. that is,
all critical updates are downloaded AND installed automatically.
then i did the fix everything move.....i shut my computer down and waited
till this morning to turn it back on. an overnight reboot! lol.
in any case, when i signed on this morning, my update was installed, and the
notification did not pop up again. i went to windowsupdate, the webpage, and
checked my update history, and it shows a successful install.
i hope this works for you my freind.

Russell thanks for your help. My problem has mysteriously dissappeared otday.
I checked my setting for the update and I note it is at "automtaic" Perhpas
it was not there before and I know I was fiddling around with it thought my
Norton Anti-Virus. Alls well that ends well. I will keep it at Automtic as
you suggest. Thanks alot.

Heh. With XPSP2, it constantly is pestering you to turn on the
automatic updates "feature". Eventually you're thinking "Okay!
I'll turn on the @!$$!%@%!@ automatic updates! Just to shut
you $@#%@#%ing thing the $$% up!".

Y'know, I'm rethinking going back to XP from 2K Pro when I wipe
C: on this box. Went from 98SE to XP, had a 15gig drive die
and all I had was a 6gig so I put 2K on that and lived with it
until my warranty replacement on the 15gig came back. Then I
just used Partition Magic to copy 2K to the new drive and I've
been on that install ever since and moved it a time or two to
bigger drives. (But that doesn't beat my moving a Win95a install
from system to system at least 5 times before something went
so wrong that it'd crash just by clicking on any three files
or folders in Explorer. ANY three! 1, 2, 3, CRASH!)
