Auto update causes PC to crash

After installing upgrade to IE7 through automatic update my PC crashed. Tried
reformatting, but PC won't even go into safe mode. The screen on the monitor
is skewed and has a lot of wierd characters in the graphics. Specs: Xp Pro
with SP2

Same here but this time I managed to get on and i got a few more updates and
now it seems to be working although have not restarted yet.
