Auto update download problems

Hi,
I'm running win XP pro SP2 and recently (maybe since SP2 or unstalling
Norton IS) I have noticed the following problem:
I have auto update set to 'notify me when there are updates but don't
download' and this works just fine, but when I click on the shield icon and
press download on the dialog, the dialog box closes and the shield icon
disappears and the download does NOT start.

When I use the windows update service on the microsoft site everthing is OK,
in that I can select, download & install the updates.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Similar problem here

I click on the balloon (not the shield icon) and get a download window. It
then downloads but I do not get a notification to install.

Thanks for the suggestion but it does not seem to make a difference, the
download window appears as usual but when I press the download button, the
window closes and after a second or so the shield icon disappears, with no
errors or events in the system log.

I also have experienced this, just today in fact. Running SP2.
I'm using the same setting as you I think, notify me
but don't automatically download.

It notified me today that 4 downloads were ready.
Their check boxes were ticked, I selected the download
button. The little shield icon in the bottom right disappeared,
nothing further happened, no download took place.

I looked in two log files, "windowsupdate.log"
and "windows update.log".
windowsupdate.log was updated today, but nothing useful in there,
on the other hand, "windows update.log" was updated on
12/5/2004 - this seems odd to me. I thought this file
was assiciated with an older version of WU. Why is it still
being updated.

How to trouble shoot this problem? There must be
some info somewhere -

Dave
