Setup: Windows Server 2000 Auto Updates
The following update failed to correctly install on only 2 out of 30 servers:
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - November 2009
The following was recorded in the WindowsUpdate.log on both servers:
WARNING: Command line install of
""C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Install\w indows-kb890830-v3.1-delta.exe" /Q /W" took too long (more than 16 hours) and was stopped
WARNING: Exit code = 0x80242007
WARNING: Install failed, error = 0x80242007 / 0x80242007
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After 16 hrs of attempting to install the update, Windows Update
successfully installed the rest of the downloaded updates and then attempted
to restart as configured. However, both servers hung on reboot. The following
also came from the update logs on both servers.
2009-11-17 20:17:58:262 1408 584 AU AU invoking RebootSystem (OnRebootNow)
2009-11-17 20:17:58:262 1408 584 Misc WARNING: Failed to reboot system,

2009-11-17 20:17:58:262 1408 584 AU WARNING: RebootSystem
(InitiateSystemShutdown) failed, error = 0x8007045B
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows Update will continue to log these entries until we force a reboot
(hard reset).
Any help in determining what may have happened in this case on these two
servers would be greatly appreciated. This issue resulted in a 45 mile trip
at midnight to the data center in order to reset the servers. I would like to
find out what caused this problem, so I can possibly prevent it from
happening again.
Thanks and God bless, Jason
