Auto Update not recognising KB886185 installed

Running XP Home with SP2. Auto Update successfully installed KB886185
(together with KB885835, KB873339 and KB885836) according to AU history file.
However, Auto Update now keeps trying to re-install KB886185 and this keeps
failing with an error 0x80070003.

How do I convince AU that KB886185 is already there, or (more importantly)
confirm that the update really has been applied OK ? ( and if the latter,
how to proceed - control panel / add-delete progams does not have an entry
for this patch).

Ideas anyone ?

JAK,

If KB886185 is not showing in Add/Remove Programs then it most likely
did not install properly. You could attempt manually downloading it from
here :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
saving it to disk, closing IE and any other programs running, then
install it. If that doesn't succeed, have a look at the method laid out
here for cleaning out the Software Distribution folder :

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=11&ln=en

Thanks for response, but unfortunately doesn't seem to help.

Tried manual installation which failed when tried to find file
update_SP2QFE.inf
So cleared out the relevant Software Distribution folders, then tried Auto
Update again - and am getting a standard AU failure message of 'The following
updates were not installed ...... Critical Update for Windows XP (KB886185)
'.

I suppose the statement of the problem is slightly changed - now is
'KB886185 does not install ' - though still just as concerning given its
classed as a critical update ...

Do a search of the system for SP2QFE.inf . If it is not present then
the download was corrupted/damaged. It may be that your antivirus
software is causing this. Try temporarily disabling it prior to
downloading and installing KB886185. You could also attempt
installing from Safe Mode as the AV will not be running then.
