Auto Update Problem

Windows XP Pro. (SP2) and Office 2003 (SP2)

Problem:

Windows installer will not install the following updates

Auto Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB913161)
Auto Update for Outlook 2003 (KB913807)
Auto Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB905756)

I was able to work around the Excel update, by re-installing the Excel viewer.

The updates for Outlook 2003, which is part of Office 2003 (SP2), seemed to
have the most problem installing.

If anyone might have an idea in correcting this problem please help me. In
the past when the to correct this problem was to re-formatt, re-install
everything, and install the office 2003 (SP2) last. The problem pops up again
when ever there is an update for Office 2003.

Check point -
Click Start, select Run, type: services.msc
click OK
Is the Office Source Engine service set to “Manual” in the “Startup Type”?
Also, is the Windows Installer Service is set to “Manual” in the “Startup Type”?.
If not, set them to Manual and try Windows Update again.
If they set to Manual, then perhaps look at repairing/reinstalling Office 2003.

You can not un-install Office 2003, after Office 2003 (SP2) has been
installed. The only way have been able to solve the problem was to re-fomat
the c: drive, abd re-install everything again. "POINT" This has not been the
only time that these three updates have failed to install. You can do a work
around to install the excel update, as for the Outlook updates I have not
found anyway to get them to install. As I have said in this message, reported
the problem to Customer Support, I have talk with several people from India
concerning Automatic updates that deal with Office 2003 (SP2). This problem
started when (SP2) was installed to Office 2003. I have also figured out the
install path for Outlook updates. The "Temp" folder that is used for the
install does not exist in which case the Update will fail. Now how did that
folder get deleted, it was deleted by another Automatic Update back at the
begining of March of this year. I have re-formatted 5 times, and re-installed
Windows XP Pro, and Office 2003. This last time I waited a month to install
Office 2003 (SP2). Before installing I had no problem with Automatic Update
or Windows Installer. When I did install Office 2003 (SP2) is what I began
having the same problems automatic updates. I can not tell you which update
deleted the temp folder, I just know it's not there anymore. "What is common
is the updates for Outlook 2003". I am still reading white paper, and have
some ideas in what is happening. So if anyone can come up with a fix for this
matter, Please e-mail me at - As for re-installing
Windows Installer again, well I have done that several times and I still get
failures in installing some updates, mostly Office 2003 Outlook.

I had the same problem and solved it today by following the advice at
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=884298.

Basically I had to fix the Registry by adding a path to my CD drive. It was
simple to fix but is risky if you do it wrong.

I used the new (Beta) Windows Live Safety Center last week for which "The
clean up scan will also check your registry for stray data left behind by
applications after they’re removed. These invalid items can be removed
safely, allowing your computer to run more efficiently." Could this be the
cause of the problem? I don't know.

Cheers,
M.

Wrong - you may need to uninstall the update first, but the uninstaller does
work

Rover I have built and set up loads of PCs and never once had a
problem with these three updates, I have seen the problem on a several
customers' machines and the only difference was I never use the
Windows Updates site to install Office Updates I always use the Office
Updates site. The problem machines had all tried to update office via
Windows Updates (new functionality - lol).

OK the problem machines would not update via Office Updates either
once the initial install had failed so I used WindizUpdates which
worked perfectly - cos its firefox based not IE based and also does
not use WGA which is ultimately behind all the problems I reckon.

You tried that?
