This morning I clicked on the Autoupdate shield in the Systray and then
clicked the download button. The shield disappeared from the Systray but no
downloads started. I realize MS may be over loaded. My question is.. Is
there any way to determine if downloads to my PC are pending?

Hi,
Please check the Windowsupdate.log and see if you have similar to:
Date Time 1304 fb0 DnldMgr
* Update is not allowed to download due to regulation.

MS has article on the above at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=910340
"CAUSE
During periods of heavy download traffic, the Automatic Updates service can
reschedule download requests on a day-to-day basis. This rescheduling can
occur over several days."

You don't have to manually.
They will download as the servers permit.
Mine did that yesterday.
Hold your mouse over the yellow icon when it appears and it will give %
downloaded.
It will also permit-notify installing as they are downloaded.
You don't have to wait for all of them, but I did.

Yes, if you don't want to wait for Automatic Update service to resume and
complete the download/install, you may get it manually by Microsoft Update
website. Select "custom" instead of "express".
Or get it manually from Microsoft Download website. I suggest though to use
Microsoft Update.

Absent any Errors in your windowsupdate.log, you may be seeing a delay
caused by excessive demand on the servers. It can take up to 7 days for all
Automatic Update users to get new updates when so many have been released.

You can try downloading/installing the updates via Windows/Microsoft Update:
Understand that by doing so, you're pushing all the Automatic Updates users
further back in the queue (which may explain, at least in part, why
Automatic Updates hasn't brought them in for you yet).
