no apparent error messages. I am just not getting auto updates of
patches any more. I understand there have been some updates and
defender
doesn't update either.

thanks

Does it start to download at all? I get it to start but it gets hung up and
freezes after about 3 minutes? Don't mean to add to your woes, just want
someone to out there to perhaps find a solution for us both.

btw this is windows vista home premium. every time I check for
updates it says that its up to date. But it hasn't downloaded
anything for going on three weeks now. I auto check for updates
every day and every day it says there are none. Defender gets an
error when I do a manual check for updates.

I have a similar problem, it hasn't downloaded anything for about a month and
when I manually check it says there are no updates. But at the same time in
the Windows Security Center under "Malware protection" it states the spyware
protection is "out of date". I am worried about not getting protection from
spyware-can anyone please help!!!

Thanks for your reply MVP. Yes, I'm running Vista. I used the link you
suggested and downloaded Windows Defender updates. The new definition seems
to be working, but when I check for updates I get the same message that
"Windows is up to date". My concern is that I haven't had a Windows update
since 7-12-07! Can it be that no Windows update has been posted since then?
How do I check to see what updates for Windows are available? Thanks in
advance for anyone's help!!

You're mowst welcome, leon. The last round of security updates came out
July 10th. The below page lists them:

Detection and deployment guidance for the July 10, 2007 security release
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940027/

The link below comes from: Summary list of monthly detection and
deployment guidance articles
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910723

Not sure if there were any reliability or performance updates for Vista.
In fact, I'm not even sure if they come down via Windows Update or
Microsoft Update.
Is the system opted into Microsoft Update ? Check by using Internet
Explorer and doing a manual visit to Windows Update.
While you're on Windows Update, check to see if there are any other
updates available by clicking the Custom button.
