Auto-update won't send XP SP2

I had the umpteenth XP Pro collapse about 10 days back and re-installed XP
Pro from scratch. As I've gone through this a number of times before (I
think I just have too many files for Windows' liking) I know the drill almost
in my sleep. I always accept the default setting for Auto Update to download
and install automatically at 3:00 am.

I got the usual first batch of about 40 updates, and then a few more here
and there. After downloading Media Player 10 there were a couple more, and I
manually got SP2 for Office 2003 after reinstalling the Office package.

My problem is SP2 for XP Pro, which *will not* download. I'm tantalized
with the little icon in the system tray frequently showing the download is
starting, at 0%; then the icon disappears. No download is ever actually
forthcoming . . .

I use Zone Alarm Security Suite for my firewall . . . It can't be that,
since all the other updates arrived without problem.

I can't get SP2 manually because I was duped into buying an "OEM" copy of XP
that turns out not to be genuine. Will have the money to buy a valid product
key in August but not until then. The prospect of three months without SP2
is discouraging. I've never before failed to have SP2 just arrive after a
reinstallation of XP, valid XP or no, as it's considered a critical update.

Any ideas?

David B.

Here is a followup, based on a reference I saw in another post to the
WindowsUpdate.log file. From perusing my own log, it seems that the AU
client is repeatedly poised to start a download session when error 0x8024402c
occurs, causing the process to shut down.

Does that error message help?

Restart the computer, does that help?
Download SP-2, Step 1 on this page:

If you still have problems, follow the rest of the Service Pack Installation
Checklist.
