Auto update works; Installs fail?

I've got updates queueing up for installation on my desktop, but nothing can
get them installed. I've tried express install, custom installing one at a
time, downloading Installer 4.5, disabling firewall & antivirus, etc, and
it's always the same result: Installer says it's installing updates, the
window message says they're installed, then an error message says they could
not be installed. I'm up to 15 in queue.

Any ideas?

Specs:
Win XP Pro SP3 on a Fujitsu Lifebook P w/ Crusoe processor (incompatible w/
Silverlight).

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

Perfect responses. As suggested, an unregistered Wups2.dll was the culprit;
after fixing this according to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144, all
previously downloaded and hung items installed without flaw.

The surprising thing is that this problem occurred on a PC freshly loaded
with XP Pro and all the latest service packs and patches, done all the right
way. In other words, this is a speed bump on the main highway; expect to hit
it with every reloaded PC.

I assume you installed service pack 3 via Windows Update? If so, this is a
known issue that Microsoft have recently been made aware of. I'm cautiously
optimistic that it will - eventually - be fixed.

Harry.

I am using WinXP and this helped me:

1) in CMD type: net stop wuauserv
2) delete "SoftwareDistribution" folder in C:\Windows
3) in CMD than type: net start wuauserv
4) download and run this: rapidshare.com/files/124622617/au_client_tool_v7.exe
5) restart PC

Credits for this advice goes Ivan Gregus who helped me.
