After a successful download and installation of SP2 when I attempt to
shutdown the PC I get a message that 1 of 3 updates are being installed "Do
not turn off computer" Well this lasted all night with no download.
Following a power shutdown and restart the PC comes up and runs just fine.
How can I fix this?

I had this same problem also last night. I use Windows XP on a Dell
Optiplex, and recently (a couple days ago) SP2 was installed automatically
through Windows Update. I feel that by asking me to allow Microsoft to
automatically update and install software on my home computer, Microsoft
should make it a high priority that such installation works. I hope they
respond soon.

Hi,
Yesterday everytime I tried to restart or turn off my computer I got the
message
"Installing Updates (1 of 3)...
"Do not turn off or unplug your computer; it will turn off automatically."
And it stays there forever. I had to just hold the power button to shut it
down. The computer started up now, and I found your post. Do you have any
clues?
(I am running Windows XP sp2 Home Edition) The Service Pack 2 has been
installed weeks ago, this problem started yesterday.
Any help would be appreciated~
Thanks,

Turn off Windows automatic updates so it won't come up again and go to
the Microsoft Windows Update site and do them manually. There are 3 new
ones.

Thank you for your response! I don't know how to turn off automatic updates,
or how often to check for new ones. Is is possible to automatically check for
updates, but not install them automatically???
Thank you for your help,

I also use windows automatic updates and have the same problem. On the
screen it says installing 1 of 2 do not turn off this computer. But it never
loads. The first time I was able to turn off the computer using the computer
button. On the second night of this the computer button had no effect, I had
to poweroff at the surge outlet. I also am hoping for a fix to this
apparently ill designed installation program.

Even with auto updates turned off and 3 manual attempts, all of which failed,
leads me to beleive there is a bigger problem. I want to purge the downloaded
updates and start from scratch but I can't find where they are hidden on the
disk. Any idea of whichfile to look in?
