Where are the auto updates stashed when they are downloaded? I accidentally
had Auto Update turned on, and the computer grabbed some of them. I closed
the internet connection, rebooted, and restored to a time before the auto
updates occurred. Windows Update now tells me there are some updates
already downloaded but not installed. Where are they? I'd like to delete
them.

I like to have the full installation package for each update, in case I need
to do a reinstall later. And I prefer a little more control than Auto
Update allows for.

The updates are stored in WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
You'll also need to clear out the EventCache folder

If you want the full installation packages for future use suggest you
change Automatic Updates setting to " Notify me but do not automatically
download or install them"
Either open Automatic Updates in the Control Panel or right click My
Computer, choose Properties, click the AU tab

When the yellow icon appears on the Task Bar, click it
The updates will be listed with links to the KB article
The KB article contains a link for IT professionals that leads to the
Security Bulletin
Download the updates from the links in the Security Bulletin

p.s. You can also move the updates' randomly named folders out of the
Download folder to a location of your choice, open the update folder,
and then run update.exe. Not the best method, but it does work <w>

Thank you. I deleted everything in SoftwareDistribution. On reboot,
several folders and files were still there. Why?

There is one file in EventCache. I can't delete it.

Can you help me with those problems?

Thank you.

Lady D

PS to PA Bear -- I don't understand the significance of your post
referencing my post on another issue on another board. Can you please
explain? Did I do something wrong?

Thank you.

And yes -- the crab is wonderful! LOL

These are not problems. The point of the exercise was to allow these
folders and files to be re-built after the next re-boot. You do not have to
delete them a second time.
