Auto Updates on SP2

Hi,
On all of the xp sp2 machines I have encountered including my own where
automatic updates is enabled it doesn't work. The wuauclt.exe file enters
the process list on startup and then disappears without having connected to
the windows update site to find updates.

What's wrong? Is this me or Microsoft?

Perhaps nothing. Check the logs.
%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log
%windir%\WindowsUpdates.log

Those are just summaries of what was done.
You can do even more detailed checking by what changed in that
subdirectory and examining those files (especially *.cab and .xml)

Another thing that I like to do is use FileMon monitoring any accesses
to SoftwareDistribution, highlighting WRITE

FWIW so far I have concluded that the updates are not being offered
by automatic updates. I'm on Dial-up and think I may not be online
often enough and long enough for it to work the way it was designed to.
