Auto updates uses landline and not satellite link

I have a half duplex satellite link that is running well with IE6 and Office
2003. IE6 is configured using a script in the dial-up settings, setting up a
proxy. The proxy has been set-up for downloading mail. Downloading Microsoft
updates always seem to come through the landline (at 38k!) and so are really
slow.

Any ideas what I can do please?
