Auto Updates for XP Home and other MS Products not working

I just built a new computer and installed MS XP Home. I was able to get auto
updates at first, installed all the service packs and updates that were
indicated. Now, in the last couple of days, I haven't been able to get the
updates for XP from auto updates. Also, my Win Media Player is v9 and it
won't update either. It shows updates and the process starts but then after
a minute or so it comes back with a screen that says some updated could not
be installed and lists the updates I was trying to make. Only change I can
think that I made was using MS Files/Settings tool to transfer over my files
and some settings from my old PC. Wondering if something I brought over is
showing these updates as already done so it won't take them again.

How do I find that file and fix it to allow updates? Or is there another
cause?

thanks,
Jo

Is WinXP SP3 already installed? If so, did you install it via
Automatic/Windows Update?

yes XP SP3 was installed fro auto updates. I did this right after I loaded
XP, went out and got all the relevant updates. But since then, and since I
brought over some files/setting from my old PC, I can't seem to get the
updates to take. The list shows I need to take these updates, but they fail
w/ no explanation given:

Security update for XP (KB95136)
..Net Framework .1 SP 1
Security Update for MS XML core svc 4.0 SP2 (KB936181)

I also can't get Win Media Player to upgrade from v9 which was on the XP CD
to the latest version (which I had on my old PC).

Any ideas?

Jo

=> IN RE .NET Framework 1.x SP1:

1. Write down what .NET Framework versions are already installed before
doing anything else!

How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and
whether service packs have been applied
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318785

2. Now see Resolutions Methods 1 or 2 in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100 (ignore the title).

=> IN RE KB936181:

See the Known Issues and More Information sections of
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936181
