Autocomplete not working IE8 XP Pro SP3

I had to reinstall XP Pro SP 3. After the reinstall of the OS and all my
programs, IE8 will not prompt me to save user names and passwords on sites
that allow this feature such as Gmail, and Hotmail.

I've tried the suggestions in this KB Article but none worked.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306895

When I try Method 3, I get this dialog box:

http://home.roadrunner.com/~jbmsbink...mplete%201.jpg

I even tried the autocomplete registry patch at Kellys Korner - Line 37 and
still no joy.

I ran System File Checker with the slipstreamed XP Pro SP 3 to see if this
would correct the problem. It didn't.

I also reinstalled IE8, but that didn't fix the problem either.

Question 1 - Any suggestions on how to fix this problem since I prefer
Internet Explorer over other browsers?

Question 2 - How can I make the resizing of the IE windows stick? I want it
to open full screen. I've tried all the usual suggestions, Hold Shift Key
when closing etc. I also have this problem in Windows 7, and can't get it
corrected on that OS either.

I've been using IE8 on XP since IE8 became available. This is the first
time I've encountered this problem.

Thanks.

Joe

Hi,
The missing file, rsabase.dll, isn't necessarily an issue. That file is
installed by other Microsoft programs- it's not a part of XP as shipped.

Have you tried disabling all AutoComplete options, restarting IE, clearing
History and all AutoComplete data, restarting IE again, then re-enabling
AutoComplete?

If a third-party security suite, antivirus program or firewall (e.g. Norton,
McAfee, ZoneAlarm, etc.) was running when IE8 was installed, try
reinstalling IE8 without that program running. If XP SP3 was installed after
IE8, you will have to uninstall XP SP3 first.

IEBlog- IE and Windows XP Service Pack 3:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/200...and-xpsp3.aspx

Try the script, ie8-rereg.zip, from
http://iefaq.info/index.php?action=a...133&artlang=en
- - -
Window size (should be easier than the AutoComplete ossue)

Open a webpage. Stretch it out to fullsize. Don't use maximize.
Choose any link on that webpage and right-click> open in a new window.
Stretch that second window out to the desired size- don't use maximize.
Close the first IE window. Then close that second resized window.

To always get a true maximized window...
AutoSizer 1.4- http://www.southbaypc.com/AutoSizer/
IE New Window Maximizer http://www.jiisoft.com/iemaximizer/index.htm

Additional information at:

Internet Explorer Full Size

Hope this helps,
Don

Hi Don - Since my original post I tried all that you suggested, plus I
uninstalled SP3, uninstalled IE8, reinstalled IE8, then reinstalled SP3. No
change. Autocomplete still does not work.

I also ran Repair XP from the slipstreamed XP Pro SP3 disk. That Repair
reverted IE to IE6. I then installed IE7, and then IE8, but no joy from
that either.

Then I ran System File Checker at boot - nothing changed - still no
autocomplete. During all of these steps, I shut down Zone Alarm and snoozed
CA Anti-virus.

I did a search and found that this is quite a common problem and tried the
suggested solutions, but none of them worked for me as they did not work for
the original posters. It sure has got me stumped.

I would like to avoid another from-scratch installation of the Operating
System, but autocomplete is quite handy.

Thanks for any further assistance you can offer.

Joe
P.S. Thanks for the links about resizing webpages.

How to perform a repair installation of Windows XP if a later version of
Internet Explorer is installed:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917964

Assuming (a) IE7 and/or IE8 had been installed prior to the first "reinstall
[of] WinXP," (b) that first "reinstall [of] WinXP" was a Repair Install (vs.
a clean install), and (c) you did not uninstall IE8 and/or IE7 prior to
doing the first Repair Install, your ONLY recourse now is a clean install
(format & reinstall) of WinXP.

Hi - PA Bear - the original reinstall was clean on a reformatted partition.
I used XP Pro (Retail) slipstreamed with SP3.

That slipstreamed disk also has IE8 on it. So, SP3 and IE8 were
concurrently installed on the clean reinstall.

Unfortunately, that seems to have caused the problem. It was the first time
I used XP Pro slipstreamed with SP3 to do a clean install. Previous clean
installs have been with XP Pro slipstreamed with SP2 which, of course, does
not have IE8. I still have the slipstreamed SP2 disk.

The 'repair' installation was completed a couple of days after the clean
reinstall.

I'll follow the 'repair' steps at the link you provided and will report
back.

Thanks

Joe

You cannot slipstream IE8 (in WinXP).

Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions. The autocomplete problem has
been fixed. There are many others who have the same problem with Internet
Explorer 8 as a Google search will show. There are about a dozen proposed
solutions to the problem, including a massive one by Microsoft. It's nearly
4 printed pages long. I tried all of the proposed fixes.

Only one works - you have to do a *clean install* of XP, then download and
install IE8, then install Service Pack 3. It has something to do with
Service Pack 3 blocking access to some of the features in IE6 which of
course, is installed with original XP discs. Apparently, some of those IE6
features are needed by IE7 and IE8. The same problem occurs with IE7, if it
is installed after SP3 is installed.

I used a slipstreamed XP Pro (Retail version) DVD to install XP Pro SP3 and
that slipstreamed DVD apparently installed SP3 before it installed IE8. My
original (Retail version) Windows CD contains XP Pro Service Pack 1.

P.S. If others are looking for the solution to this problem, make sure you
back up all important documents, pictures, etc. Also make sure you have all
of your programs ready to be re-installed, including the registration keys.
If you don't know your program registration keys, run Belarc Advisor and
write them down.

When Windows Update prompts you to download Service Pack 3 and IE8, there is
no warning about which should be installed first to avoid the 'autocomplete
not working' problem. Now that's NONSENSE!

With nonsense like that it's no wonder there are headlines like this:

"IE8 can't stem bleeding of Microsoft's browser market share"

"IE's share falls to new low; Firefox, Chrome and Opera post solid gains"

http://www.computerworld.com/s/artic...r_market_share

BTW, if I did not prefer using IE8, I never would have spent hours trying to
get autocomplete in IE8 working properly.

In any event, I appreciate your assistance in providing information on how
to possibly resolve the autocomplete problem.

Joe

Millions of user had installed SP3 well before they installed IE8 without
doing so having any effect whatsoever on Autocomplete functionality. I know
because I'm one of them.

Do you think the fact that you attempted to slipstream IE8 on the first
go-round might have had something to do with your Autocomplete problem?

PS: Since you installed IE8 and then SP3, you might want to be aware of...
