Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions. The autocomplete problem has
been fixed. There are many others who have the same problem with Internet
Explorer 8 as a Google search will show. There are about a dozen proposed
solutions to the problem, including a massive one by Microsoft. It's nearly
4 printed pages long. I tried all of the proposed fixes.
Only one works - you have to do a *clean install* of XP, then download and
install IE8, then install Service Pack 3. It has something to do with
Service Pack 3 blocking access to some of the features in IE6 which of
course, is installed with original XP discs. Apparently, some of those IE6
features are needed by IE7 and IE8. The same problem occurs with IE7, if it
is installed after SP3 is installed.
I used a slipstreamed XP Pro (Retail version) DVD to install XP Pro SP3 and
that slipstreamed DVD apparently installed SP3 before it installed IE8. My
original (Retail version) Windows CD contains XP Pro Service Pack 1.

P.S. If others are looking for the solution to this problem, make sure you
back up all important documents, pictures, etc. Also make sure you have all
of your programs ready to be re-installed, including the registration keys.
If you don't know your program registration keys, run Belarc Advisor and
write them down.
