Is there any way that SP3 woudl install automatically through AU? I have an
ACER AMD laptop that no longer boots, not even to the black XP screen, and it
just happened to start acting this way in the last week. It could be a
hardware failure I suppose but I am wondering if SP3 could have loaded
through AU since my settings are to receive and install without prompting. I
do not get the blue screen and continuous reboots, it just doesn't boot at
all. The computer power LED turns on, fan comes on, and HD light starts.
After about one minute the the fan slows down (~ half speed), the HD light
turns off and the laptop just sits there. Wondering if anyone else has had
this problem or any idea what could be happening. Laptop was working
perfectly fine before this.

WinXP SP3 has not yet been added as an Automatic Update though word is that
will happen in the next month or so.

Depends on your Automatic Updates settings. If it's set to "Automatic", no,
SP3 would not have been offered to the machine yet.

Even if it is set to automatic, it should be offered when doing a manual
Windows Update scan - provided the computer/operating system qualifies (no
driver issues etc. that might block the update).
