On December 2, 2008 CHRISTINE mentioned this problem. It was replied by Taur
Arian. I have the same problem: Cannot start Automatic Updates after running
"services.msc". After I set to automatic I try to start the service and I get
the error 1058. I followed the answer given by Taur Arian. I don't have any
malware after scanning with LAVASOFT ADWARE. I also have a MCAFEE total
security installed. After a full scan no virus or malware exists. But the
problem is still there. On my services the Automatic Update Properties shows
on PATH to executable: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs". Is this
the right PATH. Maybe you can kindly tell me how to check the process so the
service will start? May be this will slove the problem. Or maybe you have
another suggestion?
Thank you in advance

Hello Alexandru,

What operating system and service pack are you currently using?
WinSrvr2003, WinXP, WinXP SP2, WinXP SP3, WinVista, WinVista SP1, Win2k8...

Do a full scan with MalwareBytes and SUPERAntiSpyware.

Also I would suggest running a HijackThis to to ensure that Vundo did not
bring along any uninvited guests. (SDBot and ZLOB, all protected by a
rootkit.)
Please read this guide before actually doing the proceduяe
And it has all of the links for downloads you need.

Hi Alexandru

You're welcome, glad to have been of service and thanks for posting back.

I'm strictly undergraduate and you want me to go for a Doctorate? ;-)

Good luck

Thanks Engel, that worked for me. I still don't understand why McAfee didn't
spot this but looking at this site shows that a lot of us were caught by this.

Hi Engel

thank you so much for the anti spyware and the malware checker. I found
about 40 infected files. I was being plagued by the Virtumonde/Vundo trojan,
as it was messing my system's performance up a lot. just wanted to say
thanks.

I developed a similar problem Christmas day. Browser windows were opening on
their own everytime I opened a Mozilla 3 Browser. I was unable to config
settings on my automatic updates until I ran the superantispyware program. It
found spyware in my registry, and about 124 files that Avast missed. Running
superantispyware made it possible for me to fix my disabled windows updates.
I think I love you Engel!
